Hi everyone, I hope you survived the cold snap and are having a good start to the year. As promised in my last newsletter before Christmas, I wanted to give you a little bit more information about my healthy lifestyle journey as many of you have been asking what else I’ve been doing and what has made the biggest difference.

I also want to share some great tips to keep your skin in great condition when undergoing a new regime and when you start to notice changes in your body.

I always feel that the beginning of the year is a good time to take a look and review what we want to achieve over the next few months in our beauty, wellbeing and lifestyle regimes. Here are a few things that I have found really worked over the past year.

  • Walking: I love walking with the dogs and have focused on increasing my steps and walking as much as I can, depending on time and diary commitments of course! I’ve found using the heart rate monitor on my phone, which is a free Health app, has made me aware of how many steps I’m doing (or not, as was the case before!)
  • Hydration & Sleep: The body doesn’t function properly unless it’s fully hydrated so I’ve consciously upped my water consumption. My GP also told me that it can affect your sleep if you’re not drinking enough water and I have really noticed that my sleep has improved as well. Even if I have a hot drink, I try to have a glass of water alongside to maintain hydration throughout the day.
  • Protein: I’ve found that eating protein for breakfast has really helped to prevent hunger pangs later on in the day. I didn’t used to be a breakfast eater at all, but now I enjoy scrambled eggs or a protein shake and this has really worked to avoid that mid-morning craving for something sweet.
  • Carbohydrates: I’ve limited the amount of carbohydrates, sugars and starches and sweet things such as biscuits and bread, and also minimised rice and potatoes. My body was in inflammation mode and by reducing carbohydrates this has greatly helped, particularly as I suffer from arthritis.
  • Turmeric: A big change for me was when my GP agreed to help me come off steroids and painkillers which I had been taking for arthritis. Alongside these, I had also been taking turmeric for 10 – 15 years and whilst I’d always known that it worked reasonably well, it was never enough for me not to need my prescriptive steroids and painkillers. However, after using The Naked Pharmacy Turmeric, I could feel that this was a better quality product for me. I then contacted the founder Kevin Leivers, who is a registered pharmacist and with his advice and my GP approval I was able to use this turmeric and slowly come off my painkillers and steroids. Dosage can be discussed directly with a pharmacist and a free of charge consultation with The Naked Pharmacy. This helped me become more mobile and in turn I was able to increase my walking.
  • Metabolic Gold: I’ve spoken about this before and have found this supplement has really helped me to balance my intake of sugar and carbohydrates, as well as all the other health benefits, which has taken away my sweet tooth.

Lots of you have been asking what happened to my skin during this weight loss period. My skin continued to stay in good condition and I didn’t experience slackness on the face or body which is often experienced during weight loss, but I do put this down to the fact that I always follow a good regime. However I did need to increase exfoliation and layering of products. So my mantra of ‘moisturise, moisturise, moisturise’ continues to work. I’ve also been testing some lab samples, but more to come on that in the future.

I particularly like the Caudalie exfoliator as it’s like a mask and exfoliator all in one. It’s a generous size at 75ml and good value for money at £23. Caudalie Vinoclean Deep Cleansing Exfoliator 75ml.

Vitamin C is essential for collagen production and I did a couple of courses last year during my intense weight loss periods using the Murad Vitamin C range. The key product was the Vitamin C Glycolic Serum which brightened my skin, got the glow back, evened out skin tone and definitely left my skin looking firmer. Murad Vita-C Glycolic Serum 30ml.

I have also been using and loving the Clarins SOS Radiance Primer to brighten the look of my skin and give illumination. I often mix this in with a foundation or BB cream to give extra glow and a more natural, sheer finish. Clarins SOS Primer, Radiance 30ml.

Watch out for some more make-up tutorials coming soon on my Instagram.

I hope you’ve found some of these tips helpful. It has been a combination of changes that have really made a difference; looking at what I’m eating, exercising more, supplementing carefully and taking a healthier approach to sleep. I look forward to sharing more with you in future newsletters.

Love, Alison xx

I found the wellness hints and tips inspiring. I also suffer with inflammation in my body and skin. I have really struggled during the last year with pain and inability to sleep because of it. I know in my heart I must be more proactive in improving my health. You have provided me with valuable ideas on possible ways to begin.

I’ve not watched QVC for some time as some of the new presenters irritated me. I was astounded at how fabulous Alison looked, in fact I thought it was yet another new presenter. So impressed was I that I have been inspired and am trying to shed some excess blubber.
